Veteran Joaquin "Killer" Gallardo (18-6-1, 5 KOs) was brought in as an opponent, but Gallardo turned the tables on local favorite Lenin "El Volcano" Arroyo (17-7-1, 3 KOs) by winning a clear twelve round unanimous decision and claiming Arroyo's WBC Latin jr. welterweight title in the process on Friday night at Miccosukee Resort & Gaming in Miami, Florida. Arroyo got off to a good start, but the aggressive Gallardo stepped up his attack and swept to a deserved victory by scores of 117-111, 118-110, 116-112.

Last night in Miami Arroyo was exposed for what he is, a game, tough but distinctly ordinary fighter when Oakland, California’s Juaquin Gallardo took him to school in a somewhat gruelling but essentially one-sided fight for the WBO Latino junior welter title.

...Gallardo, to me, controlled the fight even though the Telemundo scorecard had Arroyo winning the first three rounds. The scores after 12 rounds were predictably wide in favour of Gallardo: 118-110; 117-111, 116-112. I could only find two rounds to give to Arroyo. [ more ]
